The current status of routine hand washing compliance of nurses in clinical departments at Lam Dong General Hospital, 2017

Objective: Hospital acquired infections is a challenge for the health sector, hand washing is main method, which has been effectively proved, and an important factor in control of hospital acquired infections. Knowledge, practice and identification of some factors related to knowledge, compliance of routine hand washing of nurses have been examined.

Methods: Cross - sectional study combining qualitative and quantitative method has been conducted from February to July 2017 at Lam Dong General Hospital. Study subjects included 121 nurses in 8 clinical departments with 484 hand washing observation.

Results: The proportion of nurses having appropriate knowledge of routine hand washing compliance reaches 86%; the highest compliance rate was observed in "pre-sterile procedures" (66.32%) and "post-exposure to blood and body fluids" (50%).  Knowledge is associated factor to hand washing compliance (OR = 81.88, p < 0.001). Training, regulation on routine hand washing, and monitoring of routine hand washing compliance contribute to enhancement of routine hand washing compliance. Overworked, lack of and inappropriate hand washing facilities affect to routine hand washing practices.

Conclusions: Hand washing facilities, training, monitoring of routine hand washing compliance of nurses at the hospital should be strengthened as recommended by the study.
