Motivation and factors affecting of nurses in 14 Clinical Departments of Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City in 2017

Objective: The motivation of nurses has influenced on the quality of patient care services. We conducted the study with two objectives: 1) Describe the motivation; 2) Analyze factors affecting the motivation of nurses in Clinical Departments of Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City in 2017.

Methods: The study was conducted from October 2016 to April 2017 in a cross-sectional descriptive research, combining quantitative and qualitative research. There were 227 nurses participating in self-administered questionnaires, 3 leaders and 8 nurses in the in-depth interviews. Research content related to demographic factors, social studies and sub-categories/motivation factors. Quantitative data were entered using Epi Data 3.1 software and analyzed with SPSS 18.0 software. Qualitative information is analyzed by topic and research objective.

Results: 1) The motivation rate is 67,32%. With 7 motivational aspects, the average score ranges from 3.22 to 4.29. The highest is the compliance factor of Timelines and attendence and the lowest is the Burnout factor. The study also showed that there was a statistically significant association between the general motivation with p = 0.022 <0.05. 2) Some factors that positively influence the motivation of nurses are leaders, colleagues and less active working conditions. Meanwhile, some factors that influence motivation are General motivation; Burnout.

Conclusions: The results of the study are the basis for providing evidence to hospital leaders to develop and implement plans to improve motivation of nurses in the future.
